Contemporary Dance & Choreography

with Lesa Broadhead

Ms. Broadhead, MFA Choreography and Performance, will focus on 20th century contemporary dance, with an exploration into the dance techniques of José Limón and Lester Horton. Known as being an expression of the human spirit, Limón’s “language” freedom from gravity, suspension, while giving into it, release. The Horton technique strengthens and stretches the human body to prepare the dancer’s instrument to be expressive. While exploring the works of Limón and Horton, students will experiment with the creation of their own choreography. There will be an informal showcase at week’s end.

Classical Ballet

with Mia Whitehead & Caleb Mitchell

This intensive strives to orient students with two different methods of classical ballet and the subtleties between. Cecchetti, the Italian method, taught by Mr. Mitchell, Associate Professor of Dance, Santa Monica College. The Cecchetti technique is a strict program with an emphasis on the entire anatomy. Vaganova, the Russian method, will be taught by Ms. Whitehead, Specialty Instructor of Dance, Belhaven University. Vaganova fuses the romantic style of the French ballet with the discipline of the Russian character in precise movements with clean lines that show an underlying softness. Students will receive training in each of these individual, long standing traditions and techniques. Daily focus will be on technique, Pointe, variations and repertoire. There will be an informal showcase at week’s end.

Ms. Cutlip will nurture each student’s “triple threat” in order to sing, act & dance their way into our hearts and hold to the highest of standards for which WCFA has become known. There will be an informal showcase at week’s end.

Princess Camp

with Leigh Williams

In “A Little Princess” by Frances Hodgson
Burnett, one of the characters says, “All women are princesses. It is our right.” This statement is true. We are all princesses, each with a unique gift that has been given to us to make a beautiful impact on our little corner of the world, regardless of how young we are.
During our “Princess Camp”, we will explore what it means to be a princess with manners and grace as we study dance, visual art, music, and drama.

On Friday, we will have a Princess Tea, a showing for our parents of what we have learned, and a visit from Princess Aurora!

Dress code: leotard, tights, hair in a secured bun, and ballet slippers. Ballet skirts are optional.

July 10-13 • Tuition: $155

Under the Sea Camp

with Leigh Williams

Join Dory, Nemo, Flounder, and Ariel as we jump into the ocean for a fun week of dance, drama, and visual art in our “Under the Sea” Camp! Our dances will be inspired from “Finding Nemo” and “The Little Mermaid”. Drama and visual art will reflect the beauty of ocean creatures and life under the sea. We will even enjoy tumbling as we roll on the sand with the ocean waves!

On the final day of camp, parents are invited to an informal showing of what we have learned during the week!

Dress code: Optional choice of leggings and form fitting tops, leotards and tights, or knee length shorts for boys.

During the “Ticket to Broadway Camp”, we will lead students in a week of fun exploring the classic Broadway hits Peter Pan, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wiz, The Sound of Music, and more! Each day will offer lessons in each artistic genre, culminating in a final main stage production with the students taking Cheryl’s Broadway dance intensive!

Music Together®

with Sarah Mason

Our music classes for kids provide a fun, comfortable environment for children around the world to make music with their families.

At Music Together, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth, in fact. Because the truth is, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have, ourselves, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make, our movements, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.
